Mood, Depression, and TMS
“Getting better from depression demands a lifelong commitment. I’ve made that commitment for my life’s sake and for the sake of those who love me.”
– Susan Polis Schutz, Poet
An Integrated Approach Focused on You
At The Center for Human Holisitics, Dr. Keith Lowenstein is focused on helping you feel better with a variety of treatments focused on you. Everyone is different, and Dr. Lowenstein will tailor your treatment to what will be best suited for you. This treatment plan may include adjusting your sleep schedules, reevaluating your nutrition, and more. Dr. Lowenstein has been practicing this approach for over 25 years.
If you’ve had drug resistant or severe depression in the past, transcranial magnetic stimulation or TMS may be an option for you. Combined with lifestyle changes, therapy, and antidepressants, TMS offers hope to those who feel as though medication and counseling have failed them in the past.
What is Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation?
Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a safe, effective, FDA approved treatment for depression when medications or other treatments have proved to be ineffective or side effects prove problematic. TMS can be an option for patients who suffer side effects of antidepressants, such as irritability, sexual side effects, fatigue, nausea and weight gain.
Performed in office, TMS is non-invasive and doesn’t inflict any of the side effects many antidepressants do. To learn more about TMS, and how it can help, contact our office or take a look at our Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation page.
Am I a TMS Candidate?
TMS is not a treatment for bipolar disorder. TMS is a treatment for depression where other methods haven’t worked, or the side effects of antidepressants are intolerable. Certain conditions or metal implants may preclude you from receiving TMS.
At the Center for Human Holistics, our staff will guide you through the process of scheduling a consultation with Dr. Lowenstein, gathering information about your medical history, and helping you determine your insurance eligibility. If you are being referred by another provider, we will help coordinate communication between your provider and Dr. Lowenstein to ensure continuity of care.
During your initial consultation, Dr. Lowenstein will review your treatment history, treatment responses and side effects. Dr. Lowenstein will also answer any questions you may have and review pertinent medical concerns. At that time, if appropriate, you will be able to set up appointments to begin TMS treatment.
